When gums don’t appear to be pink and healthy and when they have started to recede or have tenderness or pain a periodontist performs scaling and root planing.  Through this treatment plaque and tartar are scraped of the tooths crown and roots.  Rough surfaces of root are smoothed allowing gums to be healed
